Status Check: New Year Resolutions

Posted by Luise Langheinrich on 1st Feb 2023

It's February, one month into the new year, how are we doing on those new year resolutions?  I'm hearing some groans and murmurings from out there. Last year I focused on self care, trying to eek out a little more time to take care of myself.  It wasn't always successful but overall I think I did ok, sort of.  I did take time to enjoy more Dead Sea Masks at home; they always make your skin feel so good afterwards.  My exercising didn't always go as planned but I ended the year with setting up (and using) an indoor bike trainer stand and starting a weight lifting class.

But as last year was closing and I was looking ahead to what the new year would bring, the thought that kept bubbling up was "contentment."  From Oxford Languages, the definition of contentment is "a state of happiness and satisfaction." I found this rather interesting because in the craziness of our world "contentment" isn't a usual goal.  We are always striving, reaching, struggling towards goals that are sometimes unachievable.  Now, I am not saying that goals aren't important, not at all, but rather we need to savor the contentment with what we have achieved no matter what the level.

I think "contentment" ties back to my theme of self care last year so in that sense I'm carrying self-care forward into this year.  So I encourage all of us to find those moments of "contentment," big or small, in our day to day lives. I hope that with all the crazy and scary things happening in our world, we can find "contentment."
